KUCHING: Sarawak aims to build a more competitive, resilient and inclusive economy heading into the Year of the Horse, says Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.

The Premier said Sarawak's direction was clear, based on discipline, steady effort and a commitment to improving year after year.

"We are strengthening connectivity, improving facilitation and building capacity, because what attracts long-term investment is not only incentives but fundamentals - infrastructure, talent, governance and a stable operating environment," he said at the Affin Group Chinese New Year dinner here on Thursday (Jan 15) night.

His speech was read by Deputy Premier Datuk Douglas Uggah.

Abang Johari said infrastructure remains a key driver of competitiveness, because better roads improve efficiency while stronger ports and logistics widen market access and support trade capacity.

As such, he said connectivity was not just about development but an everyday advantage.

"The Pan Borneo Highway Sarawak Phase 1 has been reported at 99.98% progress as of Nov 25, 2025, with 10 of its 11 work packages completed and opened to the public.

"It is a major effort and calls for careful attention to the final mile, so that the benefits reach the people safely and sustainably," he said.

Abang Johari also said Sarawak recorded RM198.7bil in total trade in 2024, with a surplus of RM71.1bil.

While this was a positive indicator, he said Sarawak must stay focused and continue to earn confidence through delivery.

He also said Sarawak attracted RM105.9bil in investments from 2021 to the third quarter of last year.

"This confidence matters and it must be strengthened through consistent implementation and practical improvements that businesses and communities can feel," he said.

Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi were the guests of honour at the dinner.
