Student in hospital still unconscious after fatal varsity blast

KUALA LUMPUR: One of the three victims from the HELP University explosion incident is still unconscious.

City police chief Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus said as of press time, the three victims are still hospitalised.

They comprised a 54-year-old contractor supervisor, a 19-year-old student and a 22-year-old Indonesian worker.

“The student is still unconscious after suffering from a broken skull with a bleeding brain.

“The other two are conscious with the contractor suffering from burns while the foreign worker is still under observation.

“Six other victims have been discharged,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Meanwhile, HELP University chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Paul Chan expressed deep concern for those affected by the recent fatal explosion at the university’s cafeteria.

“We extend our condolences to the worker, who was sent to carry out maintenance of the air-cond units.

“We also express our care and concern for the students who have been injured,” he said yesterday.

On Monday, the explosion, believed to have been caused by a ruptured air conditioning compressor at the university’s Bukit Damansara campus, killed one external contractor and injured nine others, including four students.

According to the City Fire and Rescue Department, the explosion destroyed about a third of the room.

“Investigations found that the explosion occurred in the air-conditioning compressor room while maintenance work was being carried out by the contractor,” it said in an earlier statement.

Separately, the family of the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) intern, who died in the incident, has claimed his remains.

The family was seen arriving at the Forensic Department of Hospital Kuala Lumpur at about 2.45pm yesterday before leaving one hour later.

Speaking on behalf of the family, UTAR’s Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering dean Prof Chang Yoong Choon said they expressed their gratitude to the media for highlighting the incident.

“Several university management staff together with a few good friends will pay our last respects to the student at his funeral,” he said when met by reporters.

Police identified the victim as 24-year-old Soo Yu Juan.

The victim was a third-year mechanical engineering student and was scheduled to complete his industrial training this week.
