Calls to reconsider GLC post for ex-rep facing graft case

KOTA KINABALU: The state government has been asked to reconsider the appointment of former assemblyman Dr Yusof Yacob as chairman of a government-linked company (GLC).

Sabah DAPSY chief Chan Loong Wei stated that Yusof was currently facing an ongoing corruption case in court, and his appointment as chairman of Sabah Development Berhad was concerning.

“The Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has repeatedly stressed that GLCs should be led by competent and credible leadership to serve as effective economic catalysts for the people and the state. This appointment does not reflect those aspirations,” said the youth leader.

He added that appointing individuals who are facing ongoing court cases would only erode public confidence.

Yusof was previously the chairman of state-owned Qhazanah Sabah Berhad, now headed by Tan Sri Anifah Aman.

He was charged on June 30, 2025, with receiving and paying bribes in connection with mineral prospecting licence applications in the state.

He was accused of receiving RM200,000 in cash from Selangor-based businessman Datuk Albert Tei Jiann Cheing at 2pm on March 6, 2023, at a hotel restaurant, here, as an inducement to facilitate the approval of a prospecting licence for Nusa Kini Sdn Bhd to explore minerals in Sabah.
