Nicotine delisting: Health Ministry to meet with AGC over KL High Court ruling

PETALING JAYA: The Health Ministry will be meeting with the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) to discuss its next moves following the recent High Court ruling on the de-listing of liquid nicotine from the Poisons Act 1952.

In a statement on Sunday (May 17), the ministry said that it would hold further discussions with the AGC in the near future to refine all aspects of the law, examine the scope for further legal action, and determine appropriate follow-up measures.

"We remain committed to continuing to strengthen the tobacco and smoking products control agenda through continuous monitoring under Act 852 to protect the health of the people, especially children and the younger generation," it said.

The ministry added that it had taken note of the High Court ruling that found against the de-listing of the substance from the Poisons Act.

"This court decision reflects a healthy system of checks and balances and proves that the people, civil society organisations (NGOs), and stakeholders are very concerned about public health protection policies.

"We emphasise that NGOs and we share a common ultimate goal, namely to protect the safety and health of Malaysians," it said.

The Health Ministry added that any development and further actions on this matter would be officially announced after the consultation process with the AGC was finalised in the near future.
