KUCHING: The schooling calendar for selected schools in Sarawak could be temporarily postponed if they are being used as temporary relief centres.

This applies for schools where classrooms are used to house flood evacuees.

According to Sarawak Education Department director Omar Mahli, larger schools with halls are able to operate simultaneously as temporary relief centres while continuing their teaching and learning sessions.

For smaller schools such as SK Endap in Samarahan, SK Tanah Merah and SK Krusen di Serian as well as SK Pengkalan Sorah, however, school operations cannot commence concurrently as the classrooms are used as evacuation centres.

In such situations, remote teaching and learning activities will be carried out where applicable, alongside the possible postponement of the schooling session.

As at press time, eight primary schools in Sarawak have been used as temporary relief centres.

Students impacted by the floods are advised to contact their respective schools to ensure the delivery of necessary aid alongside education needs.

Meanwhile, the number of flood evacuees at relief centres in Sarawak and Sabah dropped slightly as of 4pm yesterday.

In Sarawak, 29 centres remained open, housing 2,802 evacuees from 864 families compared to 41 centres with 3,890 people from 1,175 families at 8am as 11 relief centres in Samarahan, Gedong, Siburan and Balai Ringin closed yesterday.

While the number of evacuees dropped overall, there were several locations that registered increases, including centres at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Krusen in Serian, Dewan Suarah and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Sebauh in Bintulu.

In Sabah, there are 366 people from 138 families as of 4pm compared to 367 people from 137 families yesterday morning.

From the total, 328 people from 123 families are at Dewan Slagon, Bintulu while the remaining are at Dewan Sri Dayang Shahbandar, Padas Damit.
