Kinabatangan, Lamag by-elections: EC sets up four teams to monitor campaigning

KOTA KINABALU: The Election Commission (EC) has set up four election campaign enforcement teams to monitor all candidates’ activities throughout their campaigning, says its chairman Datuk Sri Ramlan Harun.

He said a total of 28 election observers from nine organisations will also take part in this by-election to ensure transparency during this polling season.

He reminded all candidates who have paid their campaign material deposits that they would be subject to the Election Offences Act 1954 (Act 5) and local authority by-laws when handing out any materials bearing their party logos, candidate photos and party leader photos.

Campaign materials such as advertisements, pamphlets, stickers and posters must include the name and address of their printers and publishers while flags, posters of party symbols, pictures of party leaders and the candidates do not need those details, said Ramlan.

Any materials containing words that could cause ill-feelings, contain racial sentiments and touched on sensitivity of religion or provocations that could cause enmity are prohibited, he warned.

He reminded all candidates and political parties involved in election campaigns and this coming by-election to strictly abide by all rules and regulations until after the polling day.

Earlier, the EC announced that it received a total of three nomination papers for the Kinabatangan parliamentary seat and two nomination papers for the Lamag state seat.

The Kinabatangan candidates comprised Barisan Nasional’s Naim Kurniawan Bung, Parti Warisan's Datuk Saddi Abdul Rahman and independent, Goldam Hamid.

The Lamag candidates were Mohd Ismail Ayob @ Miha for Barisan and Mazliwati Abdul Malek for Warisan.
