Motorist in fatal crash involving UniSZA student remanded for four days

KUALA TERENGGANU: The motorist involved in an accident that killed a Sultan Zainal Abidin University (UniSZA) student on Jalan Kemajuan here has been remanded for four days from Friday (Jan 9).

The remand order against the 32-year-old man was issued by senior assstant court registrar Yuhanis Mohd Roslan at a Magistrate's Court here this morning.

The suspect, in purple lockup attire, arrived at the court at 9.45am accompanied by two police officers.

In the 1.55pm incident on Monday (Jan 5), postgraduate student Syakirah Hanan Mazli, 25, died after her car was hit by another vehicle coming from the opposite direction.

She was killed on the spot.

Earlier, Kuala Terengganu OCPD Asst Comm Azli Mohd Noor said the driver of the other car was suffering from major depressive disorder.

ACP Azli said based on reports, the man had undergone psychiatric treatment several times at Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital since January last year. 

Before the incident, the suspect is believed to have broken into a car and fled with a wallet containing RM200 in cash, he added.

The case is being investigated under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death through reckless or dangerous driving. – Bernama
