KUALA LUMPUR: The Palestine Embassy in Malaysia highly commends and appreciates Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's recent reaffirmation that Malaysia will not allow its territory to be used as a transit route for trade destined for Israel.
In a statement, the embassy said Palestine viewed this position as further evidence of Malaysia's longstanding support for the Palestinian people and their legitimate national rights, as well as its commitment to justice, international law and the principles of the United Nations (UN).
"For Palestine, Malaysia's position comes as no surprise. Malaysia has consistently demonstrated its commitment to the Palestinian cause through its political and diplomatic positions, advocacy in international forums, humanitarian assistance and practical action.
"The latest reaffirmation is therefore consistent with Malaysia's clear and longstanding policy towards Palestine," it said on Sunday (Aug 9).
The embassy said Malaysia's principled position carried "profound significance" amid Israel's "genocidal aggressive actions" in the Gaza Strip, the continued expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, as well as escalating settler violence against the people of Palestine.
"The Palestinian people deeply value Malaysia's solidarity and consistent support for their legitimate national rights," it added.
The embassy stated that Palestine particularly appreciated Malaysia's advocacy for an end to the Israeli occupation, its support for the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and the realisation of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine based on the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with international law and relevant UN resolutions.
The embassy further said that Palestine also deeply valued the fraternal relations and bonds of solidarity between the Palestinian and Malaysian peoples and expressed appreciation to Malaysia's leadership, government and people for their continued support, while looking forward to further strengthening relations and cooperation between the two countries.
Anwar, in a Facebook post on Saturday (Aug 8), expressed his appreciation to the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) for its swift action in seizing a container suspected of carrying strategic goods for export to Israel at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas in Johor on Friday (Aug 7).
He said the action demonstrated Malaysia's firmness in ensuring that the country does not become a transit route for trade that could support or contribute to the Israeli regime's atrocities against the Palestinian people. – Bernama
