Duo nabbed after scuffle at pro-Palestine gathering outside US Embassy

KUALA LUMPUR: Two men were detained following a scuffle during a pro-Palestine gathering outside the United States Embassy here on Thursday (Oct 2).

Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus said the peaceful assembly began around noon.

"However, tensions escalated when several individuals attempted to block traffic along Jalan Tun Razak in front of the embassy.

"In the ensuing commotion, a policeman sustained an injury to his mouth after being elbowed while attempting to maintain security at the scene," he said in a statement today.

He said two local men, aged 23 and 32, were detained for obstructing police officers from carrying out their duties.

"A report has been lodged and an investigation paper opened under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant from discharging their duties. The case is still under investigation,” he said.

Comm Fadil reminded organisers and participants to comply with existing laws and regulations when exercising their constitutional right to assemble peacefully.

“While the police respect the public’s freedom to gather peacefully, we will not hesitate to take firm action against any individual or group who violates the law.

"Those with information can contact the KL police hotline at 03-21159999 or any nearby police station.
