GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) is using satellite-based remote sensing technology and physical on-site inspections to assess arboreal health on the island after a tree collapsed on Jalan Macalister here.
Mayor Datuk A. Rajendran said the Angsana tree that fell on Jalan Macalister is about 90 years old and a trunk circumference of 3.9m.
"Most trees in the George Town area are between 70 and 120 years old. We use satellite-based remote sensing technology and physical on-site inspections to determine the health of the trees.
"Following inspection, MBPP will take steps to rehabilitate trees that can be saved and trees that cannot will have to be felled," he told Bernama on Sunday (Aug 9).
He adding that the couple and granddaughter injured by the falling tree were still being treated in Penang Hospital. – Bernama
