SEREMBAN: Immigration has detained 77 undocumented foreigners in raids conducted at 13 locations here and in Nilai.

State Immigration chief Kennith Tan Aik Kiang said 395 foreigners were screened during the operation held on Jan 6.

"Of the 77, 55 were caught during a raid at a soap manufacturing factory in Nilai. Of the total, six were women," he said in a statement.

Tan said those detained were between 19 and 47 years old. There were 26 Indian nationals and Bangladeshis each detained during the raid. The others were Pakistanis (10), Thai (six), Myanmar nationals (five) and Indonesians (four).

Tan said no untoward incidents were reported during the operation. "The undocumented foreigners had no opportunity to escape as we had the areas properly secured. The raids were conducted following public complaints and surveillance carried out by my officers," he said.

The undocumented foreigners, who were sent to the Immigration depot, were found to have either overstayed, failed to produce a valid travel document or committed other Immigration related offences.

He urged the public to keep reporting to the authorities if they had information on the presence of undocumented foreigners anywhere.

"We would again wish to remind employers and those who harbour undocumented foreigners that stern action can be taken against them for doing so," he added.
