Floods: Situation improves in S'wak while Sabah sees slight increase in evacuees


KUALA LUMPUR: The flood situation in Sarawak is reported to be improving, while Sabah has recorded a slight increase in the number of evacuees as of 8am Thursday (Jan 8).

In SARAWAK, the state disaster management committee said the number of victims housed at the temporary relief centre at SMK Bekenu in Miri dropped to 135 people (46 families) from 185 people (54 families) at 4pm the day before.

In SABAH, the number of victims in the districts of Beaufort and Tenom rose slightly to 1,224 (433 families) as of 8am from 1,206 people (425 families) at 4pm the previous day.

The state disaster management committee secretariat said the floods affected residents in 14 villages – nine in Beaufort and five in Tenom.

Beaufort recorded 661 victims (223 families) while Tenom saw 563 people (210 families) displaced by floods.

A total of eight temporary relief centres and one permanent centre are operating in both districts to accommodate the evacuees. – Bernama
