Duo deny smothering woman’s husband

JOHOR BARU: A housewife and a jobless man have pleaded not guilty to attempting to murder the woman’s husband by suffocating him with a pillow.

Mother of two N. Egavalli, 46, and R. Kamala Sarna, 39, claimed trial before Sessions Court Judge Mohd Zamir Suhaimee.

According to the charge sheet, both were accused of allegedly attempting to murder Egavalli’s husband, G. Kumaresan, 48, by pressing a pillow over his face.

Egavalli and Kamala Sarna allegedly committed the offence at a house along Jalan EJ 9/6 in Taman Ehsan here at around 9.30pm on Dec 22.

They were charged under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum 10 years imprisonment and a fine, upon conviction.

Judge Mohd Zamir then set Feb 3 for next mention and set bail at RM20,000 with one surety for each accused.

He also ordered both to surrender their passports.

In an unrelated case, six men claimed trial in two other courts to charges of rioting with weapons and causing grievous hurt to a man in front of a restaurant in Taman Mount Austin on Dec 27.

The men were arrested after the incident went viral on social media last month.

Choy Soon Chye, 41; Soh Say Shin, 36; Soo Toh Siang, 30; Calvin Phua Khim Hau, 29; Yap See Hong, 26; and Tan Shen Qi, 21; were firstly charged before Sessions judge Datuk Ahmad Kamal Arifin Ismail.

According to the charge sheet, the six allegedly acted with ­common intention to cause grievous hurt to Low Chun Yong, 28, at 3.30am on the day in question using weapons capable of causing death, including a meat cleaver, a taser gun, a plastic chair and an iron rod.

They were charged under Section 326 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34, which carries a maximum imprisonment of 20 years and caning or a fine.

All six also pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Muhammad Fitri Mokhtar to a charge of taking part in a riot and having dangerous weapons at the same place and time.

They were charged under Section 148 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum imprisonment of five years or a fine or both.

Deputy public prosecutors Mohamad Afdhallan Syafiq Azmy and Siti Aishah Latif prosecuted, while lawyers T. Haressh and Amarpreet Singh acted for the accused.

The court allowed bail of RM13,500 for each accused with additional conditions, including three sureties per person, surrendering their passports and reporting to the nearest police station.

The cases will be mentioned again on Feb 3.
