Puchong Umno cuts ties with Pakatan Harapan over insensitive remarks

SHAH ALAM: The Puchong Umno division has decided to sever all forms of political cooperation with Puchong Pakatan Harapan with immediate effect.

The division secretary, Mohamad Yusof Mohamed Yassin, stated that the decision was made after Puchong MP Yeo Bee Yin failed to issue an apology within the required 24-hour period. Her remarks were considered disrespectful, insensitive, immature, and insulting to former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

“This decision is limited only to the Puchong parliament, as well as the Seri Serdang and Seri Kembangan state assembly seats.

“Any informal understanding no longer binds Umno Puchong division and is not responsible for safeguarding or defending the political interests of Pakatan Puchong,” he said in a statement on Saturday (Dec 27).

On Tuesday (Dec 23), Selangor Umno Youth reportedly submitted a memorandum of protest outside Yeo's office, condemning the lawmaker's statements and social media posts, which were alleged to be rude, sarcastic, and politically provocative.

Withdrawing cooperation does not mean that Puchong Umno was leaving the Unity Government, at either the national or state level.

“This is a local political stance, as long as it does not conflict with decisions made by Umno’s Supreme Council or the leadership of Barisan Nasional at the national level.

"Following this decision, we will operate independently at both the parliamentary and state assembly levels, while support for any Pakatan Puchong candidate in by-elections or general elections will be conditional or may not be extended at all,” said Yusof.
