IPOH: Perak Umno has slammed Puchong MP Yeo Bee Yin for her celebratory remark on Facebook following the Kuala Lumpur High Court's rejection of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's bid for house arrest on Monday (Dec 22).
Perak Umno chairman Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad (pic) said the remark by the DAP publicity secretary was not only insensitive, but showed her failure to understand the political reality and emotions of the community, especially involving a former leader who has contributed a lot to the country.
"Although all parties should uphold the principles of democracy and uphold the rule of law, it is not a reason for any individual, including politicians, to behave in a disrespectful manner by mocking and celebrating the suffering of others.
"While the people expect the unity government to be an umbrella of political stability and peace, her statement only fuels the flames of hostility and invites prejudice that can shake the harmony in the government," he said in a statement Monday (Dec 22).
The Kuala Lumpur High Court had on Monday dismissed Najib’s judicial review in an attempt to serve the remainder of his jail term in the RM42mil SRC International Sdn Bhd case under house arrest.
Saarani said politics was not a field to express revenge or celebrate the downfall of others.
"It should be a platform for upholding responsibility, empathy and wisdom, rather than creating narratives that pour fuel on a still burning fire.
"Political sensitivity is not something that should be underestimated," he said.
"Provocative statements like this will only hurt efforts to build political stability, the feelings of the majority of the people who trust and appreciate the services of leaders, and damage public trust in the maturity and manners of political leaders.
"We are firm in our stance that differences in political views never justify inhumane attitudes, and strongly reject political culture that makes the suffering of others a source of ridicule or cheap political capital," he added.
