MMEA petty offer charged with taking RM3,000 bribe

KUALA TERENGGANU: A petty officer from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency's (MMEA) Kuala Perlis Maritime Zone claimed trial at the Sessions Court here Monday (Dec 22) to a charge of accepting a RM3,000 bribe three years ago.

According to the charge, Kamarul Hairie Elias, 47, is accused of receiving RM3,000 in cash from a 57-year-old company owner.

The transaction was allegedly carried out via online transfer from the account of a 45-year-old woman into the account of a 29-year-old woman at a bank in Setiu, Terengganu, on Oct 6, 2022.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Fariz Abdul Hamid proposed bail of RM10,000 with one surety.

However, the accused's lawyer, Rahamathullah Bharudeen, appealed for the amount to be reduced, stating his client has many children to support.

Judge Mohd Azhar Othman subsequently allowed bail of RM2,000 with one surety, requiring the accused to surrender his passport and report to the MACC monthly until the case is concluded.

The case has also been transferred to the Alor Setar Sessions Court in Kedah, as most witnesses are located in that state. – Bernama
