Cambodia-Thai tensions: Asean must act to defuse situation, says Tok Mat

KUALA LUMPUR: As tensions rise between Thailand and Cambodia, Asean must do whatever is necessary to maintain regional peace and stability, says Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

The Foreign Minister said Malaysia, as the Chair of Asean, was deeply saddened by civilian casualties and prolonged conflicts that have affected livelihoods and caused significant internal displacements.

He noted that on Dec 21, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had engaged with the Prime Ministers of Cambodia and Thailand to discuss ways to de-escalate the rising tensions.

Prime Minister Anwar underscored the importance for Cambodia and Thailand to uphold dialogue, wisdom and mutual respect to end tensions and preserve peace in the region, Mohamad said in his opening remarks at a special Asean meeting on the ongoing Cambodia-Thailand situation here on Monday (Dec 22).

“Our goal goes beyond de-escalating the tension. We must intensify trust-building among the conflicting parties and provide horizons for dialogue despite prevailing differences,” said Mohamad.

He added that Malaysia's Chief of Defence Forces, through the Asean Observer Team (AOT) mechanism, has been actively engaging with counterparts from Cambodia and Thailand to monitor the situation on the ground. He said the meeting would hear a briefing directly from the AOT during a closed-door session.

Mohamad reminded Asean members of the wider consequences of continued escalation between the two countries and urged all members to give the matter their utmost urgent attention for the sake of the people they serve.

Malaysia, as the current chair, also urged both parties to fully and effectively implement the July 28 Ceasefire Agreement and all subsequent agreements, including the KL Peace Accord.

Cambodia and Thailand have been exchanging heavy-weapons fire at several points along the 817km border in some of the heaviest fighting since a five-day clash in July.

The two countries subsequently signed the KL Peace Accord on Oct 26 during the 47th Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur, witnessed by Anwar and US President Donald Trump.

However, hostilities have resurfaced in recent weeks, resulting in several deaths and forcing thousands to flee their homes. Anwar has repeatedly stressed the importance of Cambodia and Thailand upholding dialogue, wisdom and mutual respect to ease tensions and safeguard peace in the Asean region.
