JOHOR BARU: Heavy rain did not dampen the Christmas warmth and love Ong Kui Kong received from kind strangers.

The 75-year-old, who lives alone in a rented room here, said he was not expecting a festive celebration when attending an outdoor Christmas outreach programme.

“At least once a week, there are volunteers from different groups distributing food, including warm meals.

“I usually line up to take the food and leave right after. This is the first time I sat down to enjoy some of the performances they prepared for us.

“There was also a Santa Claus greeting us while the volunteers handed out meals and some essential items.

“It feels special and I really appreciate it,” said Ong who used to work as a sweeper.

He said such contributions are a lifeline for many in need here, including those who are homeless.

“I used to take up some odd jobs but it has become more difficult for me to do so as I grow older.

“Now, I depend on the monthly contribution from the Welfare Department to pay for my room rental, leaving very little for food.

“Thankfully, many groups are helping out by giving food and sometimes other basic goods,” he said.

Ong was among those present during an outreach initiative jointly organised by the Johor Baru Shechinah Association and the Good News Deliverance Church at Jalan Ungku Puan here recently.

Among the volunteers was 48-year-old Abigail Meera Nair, who is also a cancer survivor.

“Christmas is a season of hope and generosity.

“Through this outreach, we hope to extend love, care and dignity to those who are often unseen and facing hardship, reminding them that they are valued and remembered.

“We want to bring comfort, encouragement and meaningful connection during the festive season,” said Abigail, who was among some 50 volunteers.

She added that despite the downpour, volunteers and recipients continued to embrace the Christmas spirit.

The programme featured Christmas carols, motivational sharing and community engagement activities.

Some 500 packs of warm meals, along with basic necessities such as clothes, towels and mats, were distributed during the event.
