KUCHING: The popular Christmas Street lights at La Promenade mall in Kota Samarahan are down due to cable theft.

The mall's security guards noticed a power outage at around midnight on Monday (Dec 22).

Checks on Tuesday (Dec 23) morning by the building team confirmed that the main electrical cables powering the Christmas Street lights had been cut and stolen.

"We are working around the clock to repair the damage," HSL Tower's senior mechanical and engineering officer Clinton Jawa Richardly said in a statement on Tuesday.

He said the Christmas lights will remain off for safety reasons while repair works are underway, most likely for two nights.

"We hope to have the full Christmas Street decorations back on by Thursday (Dec 25)," he said, adding that the mall's security team had lodged a police report on the theft.

Clinton also said scheduled events on Christmas Day, including a snowfall show, will go ahead as planned.

"The CJC Christmas night run, which is free and open to all, will also proceed at 6.45pm on Thursday," he said.

La Promenade's Christmas Street decorations include lighting up over 1,000 Norfolk pine trees along the street next to the mall.

This year's display also features snowfall machines and a Christmas market.
