KUCHING: The Hikmah Exchange autonomous rapid transit (ART) station will be a strategic hub of the city's low-carbon public transport system once it is ready in 2028, says Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.
The Sarawak Premier said the station will provide access to key tourism and heritage spots in the city centre, besides supporting further development in the surrounding areas.
"From the station, people can go to strategic places in central Kuching, including Market Street, Padang Merdeka and the heritage trail towards Carpenter Street and Padungan.
"It is also connected to Simpang Tiga, an enclave with various federal offices. Eventually, it will be connected to government offices in Petra Jaya.
"It will function as the central ART hub connecting people to every direction of Kuching," he told reporters after visiting the project site near the Hikmah Exchange Event Centre here on Friday (Dec 19).
Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd is implementing the hydrogen-powered ART as the backbone of the Kuching Urban Transportation System.
The first phase comprises the Blue Line from Rembus to Hikmah Exchange, the Red Line (Kuching Sentral to Pending) and the Green Line (Pending to Damai Central).
Abang Johari said the ART will reduce traffic congestion and transform Kuching into a low-carbon city.
He called on Sarawak Metro to ensure smooth implementation over the next two years to achieve the ART's objectives.
In addition, he said there must be proper planning for the development of the area surrounding the Hikmah Exchange station, which includes traditional Malay villages.
"We want to modernise the area while retaining the heritage of traditional villages.
"In fact, I expected a presentation today, but it looks like it's not ready. So I hope they can plan within these two years," he said.
