Flood victim numbers rise in Mersing, Johor

JOHOR BARU: The number of flood victims in Mersing, which was the first district in Johor to be hit by flood in the year-end monsoon season, has risen as of noon on Wednesday (Dec 17).

There are 137 victims from 34 families sheltering at two temporary relief centres in the district, up from 120 people from 31 families at 10am the same day.

“These victims are from two villages hit by flood following continuous heavy downpour which started at midnight on Dec 17,’’ the state disaster management committee said in a statement.

It said the villages affected by flood waters were Kampung Baru Air Tawar and Kampung Hubong with 120 and 17 victims respectively – all from Endau, Mersing.

The first centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pusat Air Tawar was opened at 5am, while the second centre at SJKC Chiao Ching opened its doors to the flood victims at 11am.

The statement said Sungai Muar at Segamat Kecil has exceeded the dangerous level 37.31m from 36.70m (dangerous level).

It added two rivers are on warning levels – Sungai Muar at Kampung Awat, Segamat at 19.53m (dangerous level at 19.95m) and Sungai Endau in Mersing at 1.83m with the dangerous level at 2.20m.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued continuous heavy rain and thunderstorm warnings in Segamat, Kluang, Mersing and Kota Tinggi until Thursday.
