Stop-work order issued over fatal crane accident at Tanjung Bin Complex

PONTIAN: A stop-work order has been issued to Tanjung Bin Complex, where two workers were killed and three others injured in an accident on Saturday (Dec 13), says the Johor Occupational Safety and Health Department (DOSH)

It said two notices, one to prohibit work and another to close the site, were issued as investigations proceed.

The department said it had received a preliminary report on the mishap where a crane collapsed on five workers at the electric power plant facility.

"Initial findings revealed that five workers were carrying out maintenance work at the facility when the crane collapsed. Investigations to ascertain the cause of the accident are ongoing," it said.

The department added that workplace accidents are a serious matter and advised employers to pay greater attention to the worker and site safety.

Those found guilty of any violations under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 can face court action, be liable to fines amounting to RM500,000, or imprisonment up to two years if found guilty.

"Employers must conduct risk assessment on each work activity and implement measures to eliminate or minimise any safety risks," it added.
