SIBU: The atmosphere at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang here was vibrant as hundreds gathered for the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony.

Standing nearly 10m tall, the trees dominated the centre of the square, their flashing neon lights casting shifting hues of red, blue and green across the open space.

Six beautifully decorated Christmas trees, along with illuminated gates, were lit up, creating a festive atmosphere throughout the square and drawing a large crowd of visitors.

The lights turned on as the visitors counted down, instantly transforming the area into a bright, festive spectacle.

Families took photographs, children darted around the displays, and soft Christmas music added to the cheerful holiday mood.

The Christmas spirit filled the air as the town square was transformed into a sea of lights on Friday night, marking the opening of ‘A Christmas in Borneo’, a celebration highlighting the unique identity and traditions of the Borneo community.

Sibu Municipal Council chairman Clarence Ting said that this year’s Christmas tree decoration stood out from previous editions through its distinctive theme.

“While last year’s celebration took us into a magical ‘Disneyland’, this year’s edition brings us back to our cultural roots of Borneo, a land rich in heritage, customs and diversity.

“A Christmas in Borneo is closer to our hearts, as it reflects the real life of our community,” he said in his speech text, which was read by Councillor Michelle Law.

He emphasised that the celebration was not just about the vibrant decorations and lights; it also served as a reflection of harmony within Borneo’s multi-racial society as its members came together to celebrate Christmas.

“The uniqueness of Sibu lies not only in its architecture or history but in its people, who live together peacefully despite their different backgrounds,” he added.

Organising chairman Councillor Simon Wee described the lighting-up ceremony as a symbol of Borneo’s joyful spirit and unity.

“We are a community that supports one another, shares laughter, and celebrates Christmas in our own unique way,” he said.
