Two killed, three injured as loading crane collapses in Pontian


PONTIAN: Two workers have been killed and three others injured when a crane used to load coal collapsed in Kukup here.

Pontian Baru Fire and Rescue Station senior operations commander Mahadir Mamat said they received an emergency call at 1.01pm on Saturday (Dec 13) about the incident at a power plant on Jalan Tanjung Bin, Kukup.

"The two fatalities were identified as locals Muhammad Alfarid Ahmad, 19, and Muhammad Amaluddin Hisamudin, 22.

"The bodies of two victims were removed from beneath the debris at about 3pm and handed over to the police for further action," he said in a statement.

He added that three other local male workers injured taken to the Pontian Hospital.

"A total of 15 firemen, including personnel from the Pekan Nenas Fire and Rescue Station, were deployed to the scene. The operation was also assisted by Malakoff's Emergency Response Team (ERT).

"The collapse also caused a small fire, which was successfully extinguished," he said.

When contacted, Pontian OCPD Supt Hadzrat Hussein Mohd Hussain confirmed the incident.

"A witness said that he heard a loud sound at about 12.15pm when the crane structure suddenly failed and the structure collapsed," he said.

He added that further investigations found no elements of criminal activity.
