Double-tracking project benefits must reach nearby communities, says PM

JOHOR BARU: The benefits of the new Gemas-Johor Baru Electrified Double-Tracking Project (EDTP) must trickle down to the communities living near its stations, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said the new stations have the potential to grow into economic hubs that directly improve the livelihoods of nearby communities.

Anwar said here on Thursday (Dec 11) that the project would further boost Johor’s booming economic status in Malaysia.

The 192km EDTP features 11 stations and is designed to enhance mobility, speed and connectivity between the southern region and the Klang Valley.

"We have completed a very important chapter - a comprehensive transportation network essential for the country’s development and Johor.

"We have almost completed basic infrastructure in our country and the main challenge is ensuring that the benefits will be felt by the people.

"The federal and state governments must work together to ensure the development of these new stations benefits nearby communities," Anwar said at the launch of the Gemas–Johor Baru EDTP at Kempas Baru station on Thursday (Dec 11).

Anwar said this approach reflects the uniqueness of the Madani economy, which aims for development while fulfilling a moral responsibility to uplift the people.

He described the Gemas–Johor Baru EDTP as a momentous development model for Johor and Malaysia as a whole.

"We will utilise these facilities to generate additional revenue for our country and uplift Malaysia’s status," he added.

The Prime Minister said the government always listens to proposals and suggestions when realising the 13th Malaysia Plan. He noted this is also reflected in the recent federal Budget, where input from state leaders was considered.

"Here, we tailor our programmes accordingly, as what works for Putrajaya may not necessarily suit states like Johor," he said.

Earlier on Thursday, the long-awaited Electric Train Service (ETS) between Johor Baru and Kuala Lumpur was officially launched. The service, launched by Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim at Kempas Baru station, will begin operations on Friday (Dec 12).

Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi and Transport Minister Anthony Loke were also present.

With the line’s completion, KTMB is introducing four daily ETS trips between KL Sentral and JB Sentral, offering a faster and more comfortable travel option for passengers.
