MELAKA: A woman who attempted to lodge a police report after a traffic accident was stopped at the entrance of the Jasin district police headquarters as her attire failed to meet the dress code for government premises, says Melaka police.
Melaka Police Chief Deputy Comm Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said an internal inquiry was initiated immediately after the matter surfaced.
"We confirm the incident. The dress code follows the circular issued by the Chief Secretary to the Government on improvements to public sector customer relations management dated December 1, 2020,” he said on Tuesday (Dec 9).
DCP Dzulkhairi said investigations showed that the woman and another female individual had arrived at the Jasin district police headquarters at about 5pm on Monday (Dec 8) to lodge a report after being involved in a traffic accident, and neither sustained injuries.
"The officer requested that they return home to change into more suitable clothing before lodging the report,” he said.
He added that the woman returned at about 5.40pm the same day and was then allowed to file her report.
DCP Dzulkhairi reminded the public that a dress code applies to all complaint counters, with exceptions only for emergency cases or situations requiring immediate action.
He also urged the public not to speculate about the incident.
Earlier, the woman later told a vernacular media outlet that she and her daughter, in her 20s, were on their way to Kuala Lumpur from Johor when their car was hit from behind along KM174.8 of the North-South Expressway
She went to the Jasin district police headquarters to file a report, but when she arrived, an officer stopped her from entering because her skirt was slightly above the knee.
The victim also claimed she pleaded for an exception but was told to purchase long trousers before being allowed entry.
The victim alleged she had to buy trousers from a nearby mall before she was finally permitted to lodge the police report.
