Over 20,000 cases of burst pipes recorded in Negri Sembilan

SEREMBAN: A total of 27,279 cases of burst pipes were recorded in Negri Sembilan through Syarikat Air Negri Sembilan (Sains) complaint registration system from 2021 until this October, the Negri Sembilan State Legislative Assembly was told.

Mentri Besar, Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun said of the total, Seremban recorded the highest number with 11,059 cases, Kuala Pilah (3,928), Jempol (3,050), Tampin (2,913), Port Dickson (2,554), Tampin (2,913), Jelebu (2,247) and Rembau (1,528).

He said the total expenditure for the period was estimated at RM 147mil covering repair works, pipe replacement, and road surface rehabilitation.

"The level of pipe damage involves categories of minor leak, joint failure and main burst, depending on the location and pressure of the channel. For repair work, the type of material used includes mild steel (MSCL) pipes and UPVC pipes according to the appropriate size and water pressure at the location of the incident," he said when answering an oral question here on Monday (Dec 8).

Aminuddin (PH-Sikamat) was responding to a question from assemblyman Chew Seh Yong (PH-Lobak) requesting the state government to state the number of pipe burst cases for 2021-2025 by district and detail the level of damage, type of repair, cost and immediate steps taken as well as a long-term plan to overcome the problem.

He explained that for each case of a pipe burst, immediate action is taken by temporarily shutting off the water supply, carrying out repair work and restoring the water supply in stages to ensure that water supply disruptions to consumers are minimised.

The Port Dickson MP explained that 68 locations involving pipes along 243 kilometres were identified for pipe replacement through collaboration between the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry, Pengurusan Aset Air Berhad (PAAB) and Sains.

"For pipe replacement through Sains allocation, it involves 12 locations around Seremban, Port Dickson, Jempol, Tampin, Kuala Pilah, Rembau and Jelebu, involving a length of 14.2km.

"Pipe replacement through PAAB allocation involves 16 locations in Seremban, Port Dickson, Kuala Pilah, Rembau, Jelebu and Jempol, involving a length of 60.8km," he said.

Aminuddin said pipe replacement through the ministry's allocation involves 40 locations around Seremban, Port Dickson, Jempol, Tampin, Kuala Pilah, Rembau and Jelebu, involving a total length of 168km. - Bernama
