KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian government has reiterated that regional peace, stability and prosperity are its top priorities amid increasing tensions along the Thailand–Cambodia border.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the government was taking the latest developments seriously and urged all parties involved to take immediate steps to de-escalate the situation and avoid any incidents that could undermine previous peace efforts.
"We noted that both Thailand and Cambodia had demonstrated their commitment to peace through several agreements and meetings this year, including the Ceasefire Agreement of July 28, the General Border Committee (GBC) Meeting in August, and the KL Accord signed on Oct 26," he said in a statement on Monday (Dec 8).
He stated that, in line with regional cooperation and previously established commitments, Malaysia urged all parties to fully comply with Paragraph 7 of the July 28 Ceasefire Agreement, which states: “In the event of an armed conflict, whether intentionally or unintentionally, both sides must promptly consult at the local level through existing bilateral mechanisms to prevent the situation from escalating along the border.”
Mohamad also emphasised Malaysia’s confidence that ongoing dialogue, constructive diplomatic engagement, and respect for existing bilateral mechanisms are key to maintaining peace and stability in the region.
