Man feared drowned after slipping off Chukai jetty during high tide phenomenon


CHUKAI: A man is feared drowned after falling into the sea during the high tide phenomenon at the Geliga Che Akob Jetty on Friday (Dec 5).

Chukai Fire and Rescue Station chief Senior Fire Supt Mohamad Hanif Che Khalid said in the 10pm incident, the victim, Muhammad Anuar Syukrimie Mahmood, 31, from Kampung Geliga Jambatan here, was sitting at the jetty with his friends.

"At the time, a high tide of 3.7m occurred, and the victim reportedly slipped from the jetty. His friends tried to search for him but were unsuccessful," he said in a statement on Saturday (Dec 6).

Mohamad Hanif said the department received the emergency call at 2.26pm today, some 16 hours after the incident, and rushed 17 personnel to the scene.

He said during today's search and rescue operation, firefighters searched within a one-kilometre radius of the believed location where the victim fell, using two boats.

"The SAR operation also involved eight police personnel with a boat, and supported by 33 members of the public," he said. — Bernama
