Bung remembered as a beloved, dedicated leader


KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian leaders led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim paid tribute to the late Kina­batangan MP Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, describing him as a beloved leader.

Anwar conveyed his condolences to Bung’s family and praised the Sabah Umno chairman for his services to Sabahans.

“As an old friend, I remember him as a firm, determined and outspoken figure who fought for the people’s interests.

“His services and commitment in the political arena, especially towards the people of Sabah and the country, will continue to be appreciated and etched in our memories,” he said in his social media post.

“I pray that his family will be given the strength to face this test, and may his soul be forgiven all his sins and be placed in a special position by His side, God-willing. Al-Fatihah.”

Bung Moktar, who was Sabah Barisan Nasional chairman, passed away at age 66 at a private hospital in Kota Kinabalu at 1.46am yesterday.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he had lost “a true friend who was close to his heart”.

In a Facebook post, the Umno president and Barisan chairman said Bung Moktar was a steadfast comrade.

“It is difficult for me to find the words to describe this loss. All that remain are prayers, along with the memories and all the good he left behind in this world,” he said, Bernama reported.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof expressed sadness over the Lamag assemblyman’s passing and prayed that he would be placed among the righteous and granted God’s blessing.

MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong also conveyed his condolences.

“His passing is a great loss to all of us. His service and contributions to the nation, especially Sabah, will always be remembered. May his soul be blessed,” he said.

Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said Bung Moktar’s decades of service in politics will long be remembered.

“I extend my condolences to his family. May they be granted strength and patience during this difficult time,” said the Amanah president.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, who is also Umno deputy president, said: “May his soul be placed among the truthful and the righteous.”
