No interference in MACC probe into Shamsul Iskandar, says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has assured that there was no interference in the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) investigation into Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin's case.

"Regarding the case that is being investigated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), what more do they want me to do? He is already in handcuffs and (the MACC’s) orange garb," Anwar said, describing the condition of his former senior political secretary.

"If I have the so-called influence, there are many serious cases where no arrests were made. (Is the Opposition) still not satisfied?" he asked the Opposition during the Prime Minister’s Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (Dec 2).

Anwar said he has not spoken a word to the MACC regarding the investigation.

"I have told them that they are free to investigate, so they are investigating," he added.

He claimed there were big "syndicates" that were protected under previous governments.

"Leave it to the investigating bodies to investigate and charge. Why do we want to become heroes to defend anyone?" he asked.

He was responding to a question by Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (PN–Masjid Tanah), who asked Anwar why he had not sacked his former political secretary Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin earlier.

Shamsul Iskandar and businessman Albert Tei have been remanded for six days to assist investigations into allegations involving attempts to recover money said to have been previously distributed to several Sabah assemblymen.
