JOHOR BARU: Police are tracking down a group of men believed to be involved in a cable theft incident.
Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said a 24-year-old man lodged a police report over the incident that occurred at the Jalan Hijau Muda junction in Taman Pelangi at about 3.49am on Thursday (Nov 27).
“The suspects are believed to be four local men who were wearing face masks during the incident.
“They managed to flee in two vehicles just as police arrived at the scene,” he said in a statement on Friday (Nov 28).
A detailed investigation is being carried out to identify the individuals involved.
The case is being investigated under Section 431A of the Penal Code for committing mischief by damaging cables. If convicted, the offenders face up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
“Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the South Johor Baru district police headquarters, or the IPD hotline at 07-2182323, to assist in the investigation,” ACP Raub said.
He also reminded the public not to speculate or spread unverified information.
A 59-second video capturing the incident has also gone viral.
The clip showed several individuals in a four-wheel-drive vehicle taking long cables from a residential area. The suspects immediately fled upon realising that they were being filmed.
