Two Myanmar nationals detained at JB checkpoint for immigration offences

KUALA LUMPUR: Two Myanmar nationals were detained at Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) in Johor Baru for failing to produce valid passes or documents permitting their stay in the country.

The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) said the arrests were made at about 8am on Thursday (Nov 27) when AKPS personnel manning the outbound car lane at BSI stopped a car for inspection.

"The vehicle was driven by a 31-year-old Myanmar national, with another Myanmar man, aged 28, seated beside him. Checks revealed that the driver was a holder of a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) card, while his companion failed to present any valid travel documents or permits," the agency said in a statement on Friday (Nov 28).

Following the inspection, the driver was arrested under Section 55E(1) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for having a foreign national classified as an undocumented migrant (PATI) in a vehicle under his control. The passenger was also detained for suspected offences under Section 6(1)(c) of the same Act. The car was also seized, AKPS said.
