Evacuation of flood-stranded UUM delegation underway

PETALING JAYA: Four lecturers and 36 students of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), who were stranded in flood-hit Hat Yai, Thailand, will be evacuated on Thursday (Nov 27).

The university’s vice chancellor, Prof Dr Ahmad Martadha Mohamed, said the evacuation process is ongoing.

According to Prof Dr Ahmad, the Consulate General of Malaysia in Songkhla has contacted several NGOs to help with evacuating the group, who had been trapped at the Wangburapa Grand Hotel since Nov 22.

The delegates will be brought to a temporary relief centre in Hat Yai after they are rescued from the hotel.

“We have a vehicle ready with assistance from Prince Songkla University, Hat Yai, which will bring us back to the border. From there, UMM has a vehicle ready to bring us back to the university,” he said.

The group is expected to return to Malaysia on Thursday once due processes, including medical screenings, are completed.

“Please pray that the process goes well,” he said.

The delegation from UUM’s Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz School of Accountancy was in Hat Yai to participate in the Thai-Malaysia Cultural Exchange Programme 2025.

It was due to return home on Saturday (Nov 22) after the event.
