Sector gains momentum ahead of VMY2026, says Tourism Malaysia deputy chairman

GEORGE TOWN: Malaysia’s tourism sector is gaining momentum ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026, says Tourism Malaysia deputy chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin.

Yeoh told industry players to recognise the rebound and strengthen regional cooperation.

He spoke at The Get Together Penang – Asia/Africa session recently, adding that close coordination between Tourism Malaysia, its overseas offices and industry partners has been pivotal.

Yeoh said this helped restore air links and elevate Malaysia’s appeal.

“We have seen real results because everyone is working closely across borders,” he said.

Yeoh added this includes restoring air connectivity, improving the visitor experience and promoting Malaysia as a must visit destination.

Malaysia recorded 37.9 million visitors in 2024, up 31.6% year on year.

From January to September this year, arrivals reached 37.5 million.

This reflected 13.5% growth year on year.

Yeoh said the trend shows the sector’s resilience and the impact of collaboration.

“As we prepare for VMY2026, teamwork between government agencies and private partners will be crucial,” he added.

Malaysia is targeting 47 million visitors and RM329bil in tourism receipts for VMY2026.

Yeoh said these ambitious goals are achievable with sustained marketing.

He said stronger air connectivity and continuous improvements to infrastructure and services are also needed.

Yeoh, thanked the state government as well as the Penang Global Tourism and the Penang Convention and Exhibition Bureau.

He said they strengthened links with key markets such as India, China and the Middle East.

“Penang continues to stand out for international and domestic travellers,” he said.

He said connectivity remains the backbone of that growth and acknowledged support from major industry groups.

These include the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents and the Malaysian Inbound Tourism Association.

He also cited the Malaysian Incentive and Convention Association and the Malaysian Association of Hotels.

He included the Malaysian Budget Hotel Association.

“These organisations play a vital role in missions and travel fairs,” he said adding that they help Malaysia maintain a strong presence abroad.

Yeoh expressed appreciation to Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing for his leadership.

He said this leadership strengthens Malaysia’s tourism ecosystem.
