Cops nab two suspects in Bukit Cina mischief by fire case

MELAKA: A 26-year-old woman from Selangor is among two suspects detained by Melaka police in their probe of a case of mischief by fire in Bukit Cina here earlier this month.

Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Christopher Patit said the arrests were made in Kajang and Serdang, Selangor, on Monday (Nov 24).

"We successfully tracked the suspects, including the woman, in an incident where a car was set on fire at Lorong Laksamana Cheng Ho in Bukit Cina here on Nov 11," he said on Wednesday (Nov 26)

The incident occurred at around 1.45am.

"CCTV recordings showed a vehicle moving around the residential area before a male suspect stepped out and walked towards the victim’s house.

"The suspect then threw a burning object into the compound, causing the victim’s vehicle to catch fire," he said.

ACP Christopher said his men arrested a 36-year-old man and the woman at about 8.30pm on Monday, and seized the vehicle and clothing believed to have been used during the incident.

He said that with the arrests, police believe they have solved three mischief by fire cases and one paint-splashing incident reported between July and November in Melaka Tengah.

Both suspects have been remanded until Dec 2 to assist investigations under Section 436 of the Penal Code for mischief with intent to destroy property by fire.

He added that police view such criminal acts as a serious offence and would take firm action against the perpetrators.
