Shamsul Iskandar submits resignation as PM's pol-sec

PETALING JAYA: The Prime Minister's senior political secretary, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, has resigned.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Shamsul Iskandar said he understood that there were attempts to attack him over the issuance of a letter of support for contractors in a hospital project, which could tarnish the image of the Madani government.

"Thus, I have decided to defend myself against such attacks. I have also tendered my resignation to the Prime Minister this morning.

"I thank the Prime Minister for his trust in me," he wrote on Tuesday (Nov 25).

On Nov 18, Anwar confirmed in the Dewan Rakyat that he had reprimanded his political secretary over the letter, which was issued last year.

However, he did not explicitly refer to Shamsul Iskandar.

The Prime Minister clarified that government rules and principles do not permit such actions.

"If there is a letter addressed to me, the most I can write is 'please review'. That is the standard.

"There are dozens of letters in Sabah alone, some about contracts, and we simply say 'please review'. Issuing any form of support is not allowed," he said.

Anwar’s comments came in response to a supplementary question from Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas), who sought clarification on allegations that the Prime Minister’s political secretary had issued a letter of support to the Health Ministry, listing contractors for a 2024 hospital project.

Ahmad Fadhli claimed that out of six contractors listed in the support letter, only two were qualified.
