IPOH: A Hindu cemetery near Kampung Sungai Ubi in Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands, was badly damaged during a landslide.
Cameron Highlands Environmental Awareness Association (REACH) president A. Dilip Martin said the perimeter wall of the cemetery near a river was destroyed after tree trunks and soil came crashing down during the 1am incident on Wednesday (Sept 9).
"The bank of the river was also washed away by the large amount of water and debris.
"A small statue for prayers, a workshop and the cemetery gates were also destroyed," he said when contacted.
He said the landslide is also believed to have buried one car and the community hall at the Sungai Ubi Orang Asli village.
"The road that leads to the village has also been blocked by debris, causing the villagers to be trapped," he said, hoping that the district Irrigation and Drainage Department would conduct remedial works at the riverbank.
Cameron Highlands OCPD Supt Azri Ramli confirmed the incident when contacted, saying it occurred after three hours of heavy rainfall.
Supt Azri said the authorities are still trying to determine the extent of the damage.
"As of now, no temporary shelter is required.
"Works are also being conducted to clear away the debris," he said, adding that the amount of rainfall was measured at 59mm.
"The district disaster management committee is overseeing the clean-up works," he added.
