Sabah polls: Shafie to stay at full throttle as campaign heads into home stretch

SANDAKAN: With just four days before the 17th Sabah state election, Parti Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal is still unsatisfied with the campaign’s momentum on the ground despite what he describes as growing voter confidence over the past week.

He said he would keep driving the campaign at full speed for the final sprint, shuttling between Tuaran, Kota Kinabalu and other districts right up to the eve of polling day this Saturday (Nov 29).

He said the priority now is to keep up the pace and ensure that no constituency is left out.

"I can see it (people starting to support Warisan), but I am still not satisfied," he said when met after a talk in Bandar Kim Fung at Mile 4 here on Monday (Nov 24) night.

"I will continue pushing," he said, adding that Warisan’s aim was simply to give Sabahans a choice and be given the space to lead.

Some 5,000 people attended the talk.

Shafie spoke at length on the need to overhaul Sabah’s public transport system, calling the state’s dependence on heavy lorries unsustainable.

He added that Warisan planned to construct a railway connecting major towns in Sabah if it wins the election.

"When lorries carry heavy loads, the roads cannot withstand it.

"There is no enforcement on the lorries that carry these heavy goods. If we use a railway, there is no jam, and... the weight of the cargo (is not a problem).

"In the peninsula, they have a railway from Kedah to Johor, Kuala Lumpur to Kelantan. Why can’t we have one in Sabah? It has been six decades already.

"We only have one from Beaufort to Kota Kinabalu," he said.

Shafie also highlighted the need to utilise major rivers such as Kinabatangan and Segama to generate clean treated water and electricity, while ensuring that environmental safeguards are in place.

He added that such projects must be evaluated carefully to avoid damaging ecosystems and wildlife habitats, including those of elephants in the Kinabatangan region.
