Sabah polls: Stop playing the race card against Warisan, says Shafie

KOTA KINABALU: The mission to unite Sabahans should steer clear of discrimination or any of the 3R (race, religion and royalty) elements, says Parti Warisan.

Its president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal emphasised that Malaysia's formation was based on unity, so it was inappropriate for leaders and political parties to exploit the race card against Warisan.

Shafie’s comments came in response to questions from reporters about the race game played against the party in the run-up to the elections, including remarks calling it an ‘illegal immigrant’ party.

He also questioned why rights enshrined in the federal constitution had to be claimed through court orders, maintaining that state rights should be honoured and respected.

When asked about potential partnerships in the upcoming state election, the Senallang incumbent and Semporna MP said the matter was not being discussed at the moment.

“We worked with so many leaders and parties in the past, (but) where has it gotten us? Sabah is still like this,” he said, adding that it was more important to work with the people.

He added that the party must listen to the voice of the people and be the ones to translate their hopes to those higher up in the government.

Shafie earlier launched Warisan’s party election manifesto, which focused on economic, social, education and health developments for the state.
