PUTRAJAYA: The Health Ministry is ready for the Northeast Monsoon expected to continue until March, with all facilities on high alert.
In a statement on Thursday (Nov 20), the ministry said preparedness is crucial to maintain services for flood victims and reduce public health risks.
The ministry said state health departments and district health offices have taken proactive steps under a comprehensive action plan.
“Primary health clinics and hospitals have been placed on high alert with adequate manpower, equipment and logistics,” it said.
“Alternative facilities have been identified to ensure continuity if any main facilities are affected by floods. All logistics and assets, including vehicles, medical equipment and emergency supplies, are updated and ready for mobilisation at any time,” it added.
The ministry said medicine stocks at health facilities are sufficient for at least three months and added units under the Emergency Medical Team are ready to be deployed.
These include the Rapid Assessment Team, Rapid Response Team, Medical Emergency Response Team and Mental Health and Psychosocial Support.
“These teams will conduct health assessments and provide treatment at temporary evacuation centres. They will monitor infectious diseases, carry out environmental inspections and offer psychosocial support,” it added.
The ministry said all identified evacuation centres have been inspected for suitability, safety and cleanliness before activation.
“Sanitation activities and flood simulation drills have been carried out at health facilities,” it added.
The ministry said it continues to work with other agencies to safeguard affected communities.
It reminded residents in flood prone areas to prepare emergency bags and secure important documents and advised ensuring an adequate medication supply.
“Move early to avoid accidents and loss of life. During floods, avoid fast flowing water, ensure clean food and water, maintain hygiene and seek immediate treatment if you experience symptoms,” it added.
The ministry said more information on flood related disease prevention is available on its website and social media pages.
