ISKANDAR PUTERI: Johor is developing two water treatment plants at a cost of RM184mil to meet rising demand, says state executive councillor Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh.
The state works, transportation, infrastructure and communications committee chairman told the state assembly on Wednesday (Nov 19) that the projects are expected to be completed within the next two years.
"The first project under the Semanggar Plant Package, which is worth about RM70mil, has a capacity of 50 million litres per day (MLD) and is expected to be completed next year.
"Once completed, it will supply water to the Kulai and Sedenak areas.
"Another project, the Layang 2 Phase 2 plant, is worth about RM114mil with a capacity of 160 MLD, and is expected to be completed in 2027," he said, adding that the plant would supply water to the Johor Baru and Iskandar Puteri areas.
Datuk Jefridin Atan (BN-Kukup) wanted to know the status of new water treatment plant projects and assurances of a clean water supply until 2030.
Fazli added that there are two other water treatment plant projects, namely Semangar 3 and Kayu Ara Pasong, which are currently at the conceptual and detailed design stages.
"The areas involved in these two projects are Johor Baru, Kulai and Pontian, with a combined capacity of 290 MLD," he said.
Fazli said the consumption of treated water in Johor is expected to continue rising, especially with the development of the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) and data centres.
He said Johor currently has 48 water treatment plants with a total design capacity of 2,352 MLD, while the average production for this year stands at 2,037 MLD.
"Projections show that water demand will rise to 2,700 MLD in 2030, to 3,000 MLD in 2035, and 3,300 MLD in 2040.
"This reflects the urgent need for new water supply infrastructure development," he said.
