JOHOR BARU: Johor recorded a decline in road accidents during Ops Selamat, which was carried out in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festive period.
Johor deputy police chief Deputy Comm Hoo Chuan Huat said the operation was conducted from March 19 to 24.
He said a total of 2,018 officers and personnel from various departments and units were deployed statewide throughout the operation.
“Police also identified 47 hotspot locations and 38 blackspot areas, which are locations frequently involved in accidents, and focused enforcement efforts in these areas,” he said here on Thursday (March 26).
DCP Hoo said the number of accidents dropped from 1,642 during Ops Selamat 24 in 2025 to 1,506 this year.
“This represents a decrease of 136 cases, or 8.28%,” he said.
He added that fatal accidents declined significantly, from 24 cases last year to 10 this year, a decrease of 58.33%.
“The number of fatalities also declined from 26 to 11, which is a reduction of 57.69%,” he said.
DCP Hoo said other categories of accidents also recorded a drop, from 1,618 cases to 1,496 cases, a decrease of 7.54%.
Regarding enforcement, he noted an increase in the number of summonses issued during the operation.
“A total of 12,049 summonses were issued, compared with 10,189 previously, an increase of 1,860 or 18.25%,” he said.
He said motorcycle riders and pillion riders remained the highest contributors to fatal accidents, accounting for nine out of the 11 recorded deaths.
On crime, DCP Hoo said house break-in cases remained unchanged, with 12 cases recorded during the same period in both 2025 and 2026.
He also said police received 1,571 balik kampung information forms through the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) application.
“The information helped police monitor and enhance the safety of homes during the festive season,” he said.
DCP Hoo added that overall, Ops Selamat was successful in reducing accident rates and keeping house break-ins under control in Johor.
“This was achieved through early prevention measures, advocacy and comprehensive enforcement throughout the operation,” he said.
