PETALING JAYA: The mother of 16-year-old Yap Shing Xuen, who was stabbed to death in Bandar Utama in October, said there must be greater accountability and safety in schools.

In a social media post, Wong Lee Ping, 44, said parents are responsible for guiding their children and accountability should not rest on the child alone.

“Every parent has a duty to guide and nurture their child,” she said.

“When something so serious happens, it is not just the child who must be held accountable, but families must also take responsibility,” added Wong.

She said families play a role in shaping their children’s actions.

“Only through honest reflection and accountability can we prevent such tragedies from happening again,” she said.

Wong urged parents, schools, authorities and the public to treat the tragedy with the seriousness it deserves.

She said all parties must work together to prevent similar incidents.

“Let this tragedy serve as a reminder to protect what truly matters, our children and our future,” she said.

“May justice be served for Shing Xuen and may no other family endure such pain,” she added.

In another post, Wong shared how her daughter’s absence had begun to sink in after weeks of funeral rites and prayer ceremonies.

She said the family had planned to take Yap on a cruise after her exams and they also planned to celebrate her birthday with a flight to Guangzhou.

Wong also said the teenager had designed her new bedroom and chosen the colours, bed sheets and decorations.

“All of it has become unfulfilled plans. These will forever remain our deepest regrets,” she added.

The suspect, a 14-year-old boy, has been charged with murder and is undergoing psychiatric evaluation at Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta.
