THE Sitiawan Sri Maha Mariamman Temple committee has been left shocked by the brazen theft of a golden thaali (necklace) from a deity at the temple, Makkal Osai reported.

Temple chairman Kaliappan Krishnan said the theft, which occurred around 2.30am on Friday, was caught entirely on CCTV.

The thief was seen carefully removing the locks to the doors without breaking them, entering the inner sanctum, and removing the sacred thaali worth four grams of gold from the deity statue.

A container of money in the sanctum was luckily missed, and the thief could not get access into the hundi (offerings box) as well.

Kaliappan said the committee lodged a police report over the incident.

He urged other Hindu temples to ensure they have enhanced security to avoid such unfortunate incidents.
