KOTA KINABALU: Election watchdog Bersih says that political parties and leaders should observe clean and fair election practices.
It said "money politics", which include handing out cash, gifts or items as well as event sponsorships are offences under Sections 10 and 8 of the Election Offences Act 1954 and must be rejected by all candidates and voters.
Bersih said money politics destroys the basis of democracy and urged Sabahans to reject such corrupt practices as the state's future depends on leaders that have integrity, capability and long-term vision.
It added that such practices enable self-interested leaders who neglect policies that can bring positive change for the state and its people.
Bersih urged the people to play active roles to ensure a clean, fair and just campaign.
It said activities involving threats, abuse of government machinery or breaches of election laws can be reported at www.pemantau.org.
Bersih said it has mobilised 70 observers in 23 parliamentary constituencies across the state to ensure the election process is conducted independently, objectively and with integrity.
