Body of missing fisherman found near Pontian

JOHOR BARU: An elderly fisherman reported missing after going crabbing near Pantai Rambah Jetty in Pontian was found drowned on Tuesday (Nov 11) afternoon.

Pontian Baru Fire and Rescue Station Senior Operations Commander, Assistant Fire Superintendent Mahadir Mamat said the body of 65-year-old Tan Swee Kuan was discovered at 4.20pm near the Barakah fishing cages in Kukup by marine police during a coordinated search and rescue (SAR) operation.

"The discovery was made through coordination with the Marine Police, who were patrolling designated sectors in nearby waters. The victim was then brought to Kukup jetty for identification by family members,” he said.

The SAR operation involved police, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), Civil Defence Force and the local fishing community.

The fisherman was reported missing after leaving for crabbing around 1.30pm, but did not return home by 7.15pm.

His wife alerted her brother-in-law, who filed a police report that evening, prompting the SAR operation. — Bernama
