Asean to be held virtually this year, physical meets only for leaders, says Fahmi

PUTRAJAYA: Physical Asean meetings this year will only include heads of government, said government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

According to Fahmi, the Cabinet was informed that the annual Asean meeting this year will be held virtually for other delegates.

“The Cabinet was informed by the Foreign Minister that all Asean meetings this year will be held virtually.

“There will be no physical meetings, whether in Manila (in the Philippines) or other areas, except for heads of government,” said Fahmi during his weekly press conference after the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday (April 1).

Fahmi said the first Asean meeting this year will be the Asean Health Ministers meeting.

“The meeting of health ministers will be held virtually,” he added.

Meanwhile, Fahmi said the Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamzul Azri Abu Bakar, briefed the Cabinet about the work-from-home (WFH) policy implementation involving the civil service.

“The Chief Secretary to the Government will announce detailed information for the civil service,” he added.

Fahmi also said the Cabinet told Shamsul to look into reducing government bureaucracies to assist businesses in renewing their licenses.

“He has to look into it and report back to the Cabinet about efforts to reduce bureaucracies, especially for industries and businesses affected by the global energy crisis,” he added.
