Fadillah to give daily briefing on measures to address global energy crisis, Middle East conflict

PUTRAJAYA: The government will be holding daily briefings to give updates on measures taken to address the global energy crisis and the ongoing Middle East conflict, said Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

The government spokesperson said the daily press conference will take place around 4pm and it will be delivered by Deputy Prime Minister II Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who will also chair the Communications Command Centre.

“The command centre will have periodic meetings, which might take place daily.

It will coordinate communications on the government’s measures and response to the global energy crisis and the Middle East conflict,” said Fahmi during his weekly press conference on Wednesday (April 1)

Fahmi spoke after the weekly Cabinet meeting.

“There will be several updates on Thursday evening (April 2), firstly by Fadillah,” he added.

Fahmi said an announcement may also be made after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim chairs a meeting with CMs and MBs on Thursday morning.

“The meeting is about the global energy crisis and its domestic economic effects. A few matters will be discussed and suggestions will also be scrutinised,” he said.

As of 3.30pm on April 1, Brent crude is trading at US$99.68 per barrel.

The prices of fuel have seen severe fluctuations since the conflict in the Middle East began when the United States and Israel attacked Iran on Feb 28, leading to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Meanwhile, Fahmi said the Cabinet decided that Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan and Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir will represent the government to meet with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Finance and Economy.

According to Fahmi, Amir and Akmal will be presenting views and suggestions of the government to address the global energy crisis and the Middle East conflict.

At the same time, Fahmi said the National Economic Action Council (MTEN), which met on March 31, had discussed the current situation and said fuel supplies remain stable in the country.

“We are also informed that several ships are in queue to pass through the Strait of Hormuz without paying any toll.

“The situation is under control,” said Fahmi.

Fahmi also reminded the public that only announcements by the Finance Ministry on fuel prices are legitimate.

“The prices of RON95, RON97 and diesel will be announced every Wednesday and the announcement by the Finance Ministry is usually after 6pm,” he added.
