Three dead, three injured in container fire aboard vessel at Tanjung Pelepas


ISKANDAR PUTERI: Three crew members were killed and three others injured in a container fire aboard a vessel at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) last Friday (Nov 7).

The Johor Fire and Rescue Department said it received an emergency call at 12.23pm, and a team from the Iskandar Puteri Fire and Rescue Station arrived at the scene at 12.40pm.

The fire broke out during unloading work in the under-hatch area of Block 5 of the vessel.

The victims who died were a 59-year-old Malaysian man, a Filipino man in his 40s, and a British man also in his 40s.

The three injured were a 26-year-old Malaysian man and two Filipino men in their 40s.

"All the injured were taken to Gleneagles Hospital Iskandar Puteri by the PTP ambulance," Johor Fire and Rescue Department said in a statement.

Initial firefighting was carried out by the PTP Fire and Rescue team using two tugboats, supported by unloading operations at Quay 118.

Nine firefighters, a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT), and a utility vehicle were deployed for the operation. - Bernama
